Dirty Diapers & Obedience

Ok, so as I have said before, being a Dad has taught me great lessons about the heart of the Father. I thought I’d share my latest revelation with you about obedience. This lesson came from the most obscure place…a dirty diaper.

Max and Clay are right smack dab in the middle of potty training. For the most part, they’re doing a great job. If they feel the need to pee, they let us know and 9 times out of 10, they get to the bathroom on time and do what they’re supposed to do. However, that’s just when they have to pee…the art of sitting on the potty has eluded them still. Now, I don’t know about you, but changing a pair of pants that is wet is one thing, but changing a pair of pants that stinks to high heaven…well that’s another.

If you were to ask my boys, “Where do you poo?” they will tell you, “On the potty” without blinking an eye. They know….they know the good they ought to do and don’t do it, (James 4:17). They have been equipped with the right tools, they have been given the correct instruction and they have even been shown by example what they ought to do…and yet they choose to wander around in their own filth…it’s mind bogglingly frustrating!!!!! (that’s about when God hit me with the 2×4 on the back of the head)

I have been equipped with the right tools, (life). I have been given instruction, (Bible). I have even been shown by example, (Jesus) and yet daily I choose not to do the good that I ought to do. If my frustration with my children is even a slight, miniscule example of God’s frustration with sin in my life….then I better choose not to wander around in my own filth and get going with life’s potty training. God’s grace is amazing…isn’t it?

See? Truth can be revealed even in the middle of a dirty diaper.
